Mexico earned a place at the 2024 Copa America after a 2-0 win over Honduras (2-2 on aggregate) that sent them into the quarter-finals of the Concacaf Nations League on penalties with a 4-2 win over El Tropico. #039;. Hosted in Mexico City and Estadio Azteca on Tuesday, the hosts were just ahead of their previous 2-0 away defeat in the first quarter-final. After midfielder Érick Sánchez’s header hit the woodwork in the second minute, Mexico continued to pile the pressure on a Honduran backline that looked increasingly overwhelmed.

Eventually shifting momentum, the visitors found attacking moments of their own near the midpoint of the first half after testing Mexico goalkeeper Angel Malagon, who was forced to make a pair of crucial saves.
The hosts then swung things back in their favor with a goal in the 43rd minute from midfielder Luis Chávez.
Standing over a free-kick close to 30 yards away from the net, Chavez caught opposing goalkeeper Edrick Menjivar off-guard with a clever shot that put Mexico up 1-0.
After the halftime break, Malagon was forced to make another vital save in the 61st minute following a short-range header from Honduras’ Anthony Lozano.
Recognizing the need to refresh a tiring squad, Mexico’s “Jimmy” Lozano began to gradually bring on substitutions like Cesar Huerta, Julián Quiñones, Santiago Giménez, and Luis Romo through three separate windows in the second half.
El Tri midfielder Edson Álvarez again increased the attacking pressure and scored a dramatic goal in stoppage time in the 101st minute to tie the score and send the quarter-final series into extra time.
Substitutes Olvelin Pineda and Julián Araújo kept Mexico’s pressure on until extra time, but there were no goals in the remaining half, and the game ended in a penalty shootout.
Huerta’s goal gave Mexico a 4-2 penalty shootout victory and Copa America Obtained the right to participate.
Mexico concludes the year with a friendly against Colombia on December 16th at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum.
They will continue their journey to the Nations League until the semi-final round in March 2024.
That same month, Honduras will take part in an important play-in match for a spot in the Copa America.
